The Department of Computer Science at Mohammad Ali Jinnah University aims at providing education and training at all levels to contribute to the national pool of computer scientists who can meet the demands of the industry and the academia. While the BS programs primarily focus on training students who would assume the role of developers, designers, and architects of computing systems, the MS and the PhD programs focus on preparing researchers and academicians. The prospective practitioners in the field of Computer Science and Software Engineering are provided with the necessary skills to construct reliable computing systems by applying scientific, engineering, and management skills, while the prospective researchers are put through rigorous training in the research methodologies. However, the design, the development, and the research activities are structured so as to supplement each other.

The BS program offered by the department focuses on producing high quality computer scientists with a broad vision and strong ethical values. In order to produce graduates with a well-balanced personality, general awareness of social issues and basic reasoning capabilities, students are also required to take, in addition to core and elective courses of the discipline, a number of general courses in the area of humanities, social sciences, religion and ethics, languages and communication skills. The overall program provides a highly conducive environment and an excitement driven approach that encourages creativity to accomplish results.The curriculum for BS CS program contains 7 elective courses (21 SCH). The students, who want to specialize in one of the above areas, are required to take at least five courses (called specialization electives). If a student does not take five or more courses from a specialization stream, then he/she will be awarded BS CS without any specialization.

World today is experiencing extensive use of software in every aspect of life; from a simple handset to multi-billion dollars satellite, everything is being backed by software. This phenomenal use of software creates a great demand for software developers who can apply theory and practice of computer science, engineering and mathematical analysis to design, develop, test and evaluate software and systems. The Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering (BS(SE)) program will attract those who are inspired by the power and magnificence of software in today’s life. It has been introduced to produce the software engineers to meet current challenges in production of high quality software within cost and schedule. This degree will enable the students to begin a career in software development, project management, quality management, enterprise application development, business & system analysis, architecture, design, testing etc.

The Masters Program in Computer Science is designed to provide rigorous training in both theoretical and applied areas of Computer Science. It requires course work in mainstream areas of Computer Science along with a thesis. The thesis exposes students to both the research and design methodology. The combination of course work and the thesis prepares students to take up positions in the academia as well as industry, while also providing a sufficient base for transition to doctoral studies.

The Department provides a vibrant and dynamic environment that encourages excellence in research specifically in the areas of Software Systems & Engineering, Multimedia & Communications, Web and Information Systems and Computational Business Intelligence. The PhD program aims at producing graduates who could meet the challenges of emerging international trends in Computer Science. To achieve this objective, we have a team of highly qualified and dedicated faculty members; a cohesive and carefully designed PhD program. A due emphasis has been placed on the applied and industrial aspects of the research. For this purpose, the Department has established a strong liaison with Research & Development organizations and industry.
